Simple green smoothie for beginners + video

I have not always been a fan of the green smoothie.  In fact, I seem to remember the first ones I created tasting like swamp water!  However, I persisted and I have come up with the perfect recipe for a simple green smoothie that tastes delicious and is good for you too.

I am always looking for ways to save time in the kitchen, especially in the morning.  I find smoothies are a great way of packing in heaps of nutrients in a delicious way.  By following this simple formula, you can create smoothies that nourish our bodies as well as tasting great.

Simple smoothie formula:

Your choice of…

fruit + veg + liquid + sweetener + protein + fats = a meal in a glass!

Some suggestions…

Fruit – frozen bananas, berries, mango, pineapple, passionfruit, pear

Veg – baby spinach, kale, cucumber, beetroot

Liquid – almond milk, full cream milk, coconut water, water

Sweetener – medjool dates, honey, maple syrup (remember fruit is pretty sweet, you might not need any extras)

Protein – natural yoghurt, almond butter, nuts + seeds

Good fats – coconut oil or butter, yoghurt, almond or peanut butter, seeds, chia seeds

My favourite simple green smoothie

My kids and I LOVE this simple green smoothie combination and have it often.  Sometimes we make it in to a smoothie bowl which you can see us doing in this video.

Simple Green Smoothie

Serves 2

To a high speed blender add: a big handful of kale, a handful of baby spinach, a cup of chopped frozen banana, a cup of chopped fresh pineapple, a chopped kiwi fruit, a tablespoon of coconut oil, a tablespoon of chia seeds, a cup of almond milk (if you like it sweeter add a dash of honey).

Blend furiously until no lumps remain – this is important!  Children do not like lumps (and mums don’t either).

Pour into glasses or jars or bowls to decorate.  Any leftovers can be poured into icy pole moulds for dessert.
